Maybelline Dream Wonder Powder Review [Comparison w/ Dream Matte]

Tuesday, April 08, 2014

Hello everyone! How have you all been?
A couple days ago I visited Target to repurchase some essentials and then I came across a new line from Maybelline called the Dream Wonder Powder. They have discontinued the Dream Matte powder which I have been using but I don't like it very much so thank god they discontinued it! Since I'm still in the need of a decent powder I decided to give this a shot. So far, the reviews from people have been a hit and miss. Let's get on with the review!
The packaging is kinda cheap being made from a cheap plastic but what do you expect from a drugstore product? The colour is pretty though being a nudish pink with a rose gold accent. You might want to be careful when closing the compact though since the pan the powder is on is kinda heavy so when you use the mirror that's on the botton of the pan the powder might crumble when you close the lid.
Shade wise, the Dream Wonder comes in 16 different shades ranging from light to tan. There are no shades for fair skinned and deeper skinned people sooo that sucks. What's the point of 16 shades when they're only for light to medium skins? I don't understand the point of that.
Maybelline claims that this powder has less talc then regular powders and boasts about how smooth the powder is. I must say, they are right about how smooth the powder is. When you feel the powder, it's like touching a cream. It's probably one of the smoothest drugstore powders I felt.
Although it's creamy, when you put a brush into the product you get a whole bunch of fallout everywhere! Even if I lightly tap my brush in the powder there's still a whole bunch of powder flying everywhere. The product comes with a sponge but I have yet to apply it with a sponge. Maybe it'll be better since it probably won't have powder flying everywhere.
Application of the product is a breeze. It doesn't have a chalky finish and makes my skin look natural. They also say that this powder can also double as a powder foundation. I don't currently have the skin for a powder foundation since I have some dry spots but this does have decent medium coverage. I can see this powder being a nice everyday foundation for a natural look. I'll probably try it out as a powder foundation soon so I'll let you guys know how that works out.

Unfortunately, this powder doesn't work well for oil control. I find myself getting oily around my nose within two hours. Around my dryer areas, it's perfectly fine. I see that a lot of the people who dislike this product are oily skinned so I think this powder would be more suitable for dryer or aged skin.

In comparison to the discontinued Dream Matte powder, I would prefer the Dream Wonder any day, any second. The Dream Matte was always too chalky and had a very hard texture. You can tell in the swatch, the Dream Wonder just seamlessly blends into the skin while the Dream Matte just sits there and you can see the flakes. Probably because the Dream Wonder is less talc-based than the Dream Matte. Anyways, the Dream Wonder is a good successor to the Dream Matte and I'm happy to throw out my Dream Matte powder now so goodbye Dream Matte!

Likes:
- Creamy texture
- Natural "second skin" finish
- Buildable medium coverage
- Drugstore!! (I bought it for $7.50 but it usually ranges from $8-9)
- Double up as a powder foundation
- Sets foundation well
- BETTER than the Dream Matte (imo)

Not-so-likes:
- No shades for fair skins and deeper skins
- Powder fallout everywhere!!!!
- Not so great for oil control

Overall, I like this powder. It's MUCH better than the Dream Matte in my opinion and I'll continue to use this. I don't know if I'll repurchase it but I'll definitely use it up. If you don't have too much concerns about oil control and want a decently coverage powder at a drugstore price, this will be the product for you.

Before I leave, I want to tell you guys that I opened a store again! If you don't remember, I just sell pre-owned clothes that I want to get rid of. I'm only selling clothes that I think someone else will want so I'm not selling out of date clothes. So please take a look and see if there's anything you want. I will be adding accessories soon!

  1. Great review Lily ^_^ I will be definitely checking this powder out. I really like how it is more translucent than the Dream Matte. I find when I apply foundation, many powders just make my face look like a cakey mess.
